This page is for a flat roof, not a house

A rooftop package unit puts the whole system in one cabinet on the roof of a commercial building: cooling, heat, blower, filters, and the dampers that mix outside air with return air. It serves a retail box, an office floor, or a restaurant, typically in the three- to twenty-five-ton range, with its ductwork dropping straight through the roof beneath it. A homeowner with a pitched roof is on the wrong page; the residential systems are listed alongside.

Replacing one is a job about the roof as much as the machine. The unit sits on a curb, and a new unit's footprint rarely matches the old curb exactly, so either an adapter curb bridges the difference or a model built as an exact-fit replacement is chosen to avoid it. Either way the existing duct connections and the roof membrane are what get preserved, and the lift itself is a crane job planned around the building's parking and access. Single-zone versus multi-zone, and whether the economizer actually opens to outside air when it should, are settled before the crane is booked.
