A Sub-Zero built-in is two refrigerators sharing a shell. Since the 500 series of 1987, the fresh-food side and the freezer side each have their own compressor, evaporator and defrost circuit. So the usual complaint is lopsided: the freezer holds while the refrigerator drifts warm, or the reverse; the failed side says nothing about the other.
On Classic (BI) and PRO cabinets the compressors and condenser sit on top behind the louvered grille and are serviced from the front with the unit left in place. On Designer and the older IT/IC integrated models they sit underneath. Sub-Zero's own guidance is that the compressors can be unbolted to drop the height by roughly nine to eleven inches for a doorway that will not pass an 84-inch cabinet, a real problem on narrow Boston stairways; it wants that done only by its own factory-certified service, which an independent company is not, and excludes resulting sealed-system damage from warranty.
Parts are not sold online or to the public. They come through Sub-Zero's regional Factory Certified Parts Distributor, and that channel, not the fault, sets the wait for anything not on the truck.

It is a maintenance reminder first. Sub-Zero asks for the condenser to be brushed and vacuumed every three to six months, because a built-in cabinet chokes airflow faster than a freestanding fridge. Clean it and watch. If the indicator returns within days on a clean condenser, the sealed system or its fan is working too hard and needs a proper diagnosis.
Because the two sides are independent systems. On the refrigerator side the usual suspects are an evaporator fan that stopped or iced, a defrost circuit that let frost block the coil, or a gasket that no longer seals. The freezer's compressor tells you nothing about it. The fix ranges from a gasket to a fan motor; a compressor is the least likely answer.
Often. The 500 series predates on-board diagnostics, so it is checked with thermometers and by hand rather than by code. Gaskets, fan motors, defrost parts and relays are still supplied; some control boards are no longer made new and are rebuilt instead. A gasket, fan or defrost fault is worth doing; a compressor or evaporator leak on a thirty-year-old cabinet usually is not.
No. The sealed-system warranty (compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier, tubing) runs five years for parts and labor and through year twelve for parts only, and Sub-Zero handles it through its own factory-certified network. If a compressor or evaporator is suspected inside that window, the warranty route comes first. Fans, boards, gaskets and ice makers fall outside it after the two-year full warranty.
