GE Appliances builds most of the machines on this page in its own US plants, Louisville, LaFayette, Decatur and Selmer, and its parts operation is its own, and old part numbers get superseded rather than dropped, so a fifteen-year-old GE refrigerator usually still has a listed control board. The rating plate dates the machine: the first two serial letters encode month and year, on a twelve-year cycle.
Two failures define GE repair work. The GTW top-load washers fail at the shift actuator, the "mode shifter" that moves the drive between agitate and spin, and at the splutch that couples the basket; both bolt on from underneath, and the transmission behind them rarely goes first. GE's French-door and bottom-freezer refrigerators pair an Embraco variable-speed compressor with a separate inverter board; a fridge whose condenser fan runs while the compressor stays silent is more often that board than the compressor.
GE's Unitized Spacemaker, the 27-inch laundry center with the controls between washer and dryer, is the closet unit in many Boston condos. It is one cabinet, vented from the rear or the side.
When considering the cost of repairing a GE appliance, customers should consider the availability of parts, the technical expertise required, the age of the appliance, and warranty coverage.
Warranty, genuine parts and lead times — the three things people ask first.
Read the serial number on the rating plate. The first letter is the month, the second is the year; GE skips some letters and the year letters repeat every twelve years, so a serial can point to two dates a dozen years apart. The model style and the date printed in the owner's manual settle which one.
Usually it comes forward, not out. The Spacemaker is one cabinet, so the dryer cannot be lifted off to reach the washer; the tower rolls forward far enough to open the back, and it goes back the same way. Side-vented installs move more easily than rear-vented ones on a rigid duct.
Usually not. On the GTW series the first suspect is the shift actuator, a small motorized part under the tub that moves the drive between agitate and spin; the second is the splutch, the spin clutch on the basket drive. Both are inexpensive bolt-on parts. The transmission itself rarely fails before those two.
Not necessarily. GE's variable-speed compressors are driven by an inverter board that takes commands from the main board; either board can stop the compressor while the fans keep going. The inverter board is tested and replaced first because it fails more often and costs far less. A true compressor failure means a sealed-system job.
