When ductless is the only option, and when it is merely one

A house that heats with radiators, baseboard, or wall units has no ducts and usually no room to build them, and in that house ductless is not one choice among several but the way to add cooling and heat-pump heating at all. Each indoor head connects to the outdoor unit through a small line set, so the work is holes and line runs rather than chases through finished ceilings.

Single-zone or multi-zone is the real decision. One outdoor unit can serve several heads, but all of them run in the same mode at the same time, and the usual advice is to keep the count to about three per outdoor unit even where the maker allows more. Head style matters too: a high wall unit senses air near the ceiling, so the room at chest height can sit colder than the setpoint; a floor console or ceiling cassette avoids that. Each head is sized to its own room, because an oversized head short-cycles.

Outdoors, the unit stands above the expected snow line, away from an eave that sheds onto it, and on a tight lot where it can go is often the constraint that shapes the whole design.
