A home repair bill has four parts: the diagnostic, the labor, the part, and the work it takes to reach the machine at all. The table above covers the first one. The other three are what make the same fault cost different amounts in two different kitchens.

Labor follows access more than it follows the fault. A freestanding refrigerator rolls out; a panel-ready one is screwed to the cabinetry and has to be unpanelled before anyone sees the compressor. A dishwasher under a stone counter cannot be lifted out by its top. A washer stacked in a closet, or a dryer in a basement with a low ceiling, adds time that has nothing to do with the broken component. The rating plate settles the part: the model number narrows it, and the serial sometimes narrows it further, which is why a price given from a brand name alone is a guess.

The last question is whether the repair is worth it against buying new. That depends on the machine's age and what the part costs, and it is answered when the fault is known, before you commit to the work, not after.
