LG builds its own compressors, and through most of the 2010s its French-door and side-by-side refrigerators used the linear compressor, a piston driven straight by an electromagnet instead of a crankshaft. Units built 2014-2017 failed often enough that a class action (Bentley v. LG) settled in 2020 with extended coverage; that window has closed and the standard warranty applies: five years on the sealed system, then the compressor as a part only through year ten. Many current models use a rotary Smart Inverter compressor instead; the cabinet label says which you have.
Every current LG washer is direct drive: the rotor bolts onto the drum shaft, no belt, no pulley. The part that actually fails is small: the Hall sensor on the stator reporting rotor position. When it drifts, the board reports a locked motor while the windings are fine. The ten-year motor warranty covers the stator and rotor, parts only after year one; the sensor is a separate, inexpensive part.
In February 2025 LG recalled about 500,000 electric ranges sold for over 8 years for front knobs that switch on by contact; the remedy is a warning label, not a visit.

Under LG's current US warranty, years six to ten cover the linear or inverter compressor as a part only; labor, the drier and refrigerant are yours. Before a compressor is ordered, the boards that drive it get tested, because the compressor is the expensive answer and on an LG it is not always the right one.
The failure cluster and the lawsuit concerned units built 2014-2017. LG revised the compressor after that and has moved many current models to a rotary Smart Inverter compressor. Nobody can promise a given unit will not fail, but a 2023 LG is not the 2015 machine that earned the reputation. Check the compressor type on the cabinet label.
Usually not. On an LG direct-drive washer that fault points first at the Hall sensor on the stator, then at the harness, then at the control board; the motor windings rarely fail. If the motor itself is bad, the ten-year warranty covers the stator and rotor as parts, and the labor after the first year is on the owner.
The WashTower is one cabinet, about 74 inches tall, with the washer below and the dryer above, not two boxes on a stacking kit. It is not lifted apart like a stacked pair. Whether it stays in the closet depends on what failed: front access covers a good share of washer work, while anything at the back means rolling the whole tower forward, so clearance decides.
