ACCREDITEDThe Middlesex Fells and Spot Pond take up much of Stoneham, so the housing is packed into what is left: Capes and split-levels from the fifties, a furnace in a closet built to the width of the furnace, central air added decades later wherever it would fit.
No commuter rail stops here, which means driveways instead of permit parking and an easy arrival. The difficulty is indoors — a filter behind a finished wall, a condenser boxed in by a deck that came after it, a dryer run that crosses the whole basement.
These stages may vary slightly depending on the type of appliance being repaired and the specific requirements of the client.

Access, parking and what the buildings here do to a service call.
Stoneham sells service and construction vehicle placards for the downtown municipal lots, by the day, a few days a week at most. Main Street itself is swept Tuesdays early morning from April through December, one side then the other. Tell us which lot is behind your building and whether the rear door opens; that is the route the machine takes.
Repairable more often than people expect. Stoneham has one of the highest oil shares of the towns we cover, close to three in ten homes, so the burner parts, nozzles, filters, electrodes, cad cell, are standard stock. What ends an oil furnace is a cracked heat exchanger or a tank that is failing, not a burner fault. We say which it is; replacing the fuel is a separate conversation.
Not from the district. Nobility Hill is a National Register district, which is an honor, not a regulation, and Stoneham has no local historic district under the state's design-review law; its Historical Commission works under the demolition-delay statute instead. So the outdoor unit answers to zoning and the building department, and to the neighbor whose window it faces, not to a review board.
The ban itself is not the obstacle; there is no on-street parking during it, but almost every house here has a driveway, and that is where we ask to go. The obstacle is the walk from the van to the bulkhead with a dryer on a hand truck across an unplowed side yard. We call first to ask whether the driveway and the path to the basement door are clear.
