Viking: open burners, a Mississippi factory, and two recalls to check first

Viking is one of the few makes still selling open burners. On 5-series 30- and 36-inch VGIC ranges and on the 7-series, the grate, burner bowl and grate support lift off and the flame ports sit exposed; there is no sealed cap, so a boil-over goes straight to the ports and the igniter. VGR models are the sealed-burner version. The gas oven below runs a 30,000 BTU U-shaped burner with a ProFlow baffle and a Gourmet-Glo infrared broiler.

Viking builds its own platform in Greenwood, Mississippi, where it was founded in 1987; it was sold to Middleby in 2013, and about a fifth of the workforce was laid off within months. Unlike Sub-Zero, Viking parts move through the general appliance-parts distributors, which usually makes them faster to source.

Two recalls matter. Built-in bottom-freezer refrigerators sold 2005 to 2012 (VCBB, VIBB, DDBB and related) had top-hinge screws that could shear and drop the door; 5-series freestanding gas ranges sold 2007 to 2014 could switch their ovens on by themselves. Both were free in-home corrections, so the serial is checked before anyone is paid.

Viking appliance repair cost

Premium Parts Viking appliances use high-quality, specialized parts, which can be more expensive than those used in other brands and increase the overall cost of repairs.
Warranty Coverage If the appliance is still under warranty, the cost of repairs may be covered by the manufacturer, reducing the out-of-pocket expenses for the customer.
Age of Appliance Older Viking appliances may require more extensive repairs, which can increase the overall cost of the repair job.
Technical Expertise Due to the complex and innovative design of Viking appliances, repairs often require specialized knowledge and expertise, which can increase labor costs.

When considering the cost of repairing a Viking appliance, customers should take into account the quality of specialized parts, the technical expertise required, the age of the appliance, and warranty coverage.

Brand questions

Warranty, genuine parts and lead times — the three things people ask first.

If it is a bottom-freezer built-in made between 2005 and 2012 (prefixes VCBB, VIBB, DDBB, DTBB, DFBB), likely yes. The top hinge pivot-plate screws could shear and let the door fall. Stop using it if the door sags or will not seal, and get the free hinge correction through Viking's recall line. Any other door problem is ordinary hinge or gasket work.
