KitchenAid started as Hobart's stand-mixer name in 1919 and has belonged to Whirlpool since 1986. Today it is the group's premium tier, and the line splits in two. Counter-depth French-door refrigerators, freestanding ranges and top-load washers sit on Whirlpool platforms: the same compressor, board family and drive parts under a heavier stainless skin and a different control overlay. The built-in side does not. The 42- and 48-inch built-in refrigerators, side-by-side, bottom-freezer and panel-ready, are a separate chassis with their own hinges, gasketing and cabinet anchoring, and the 36- and 48-inch commercial-style dual-fuel ranges with the Even-Heat convection oven are their own platform as well.
That split decides how the repair goes. A built-in KitchenAid is anchored to the cabinetry behind a matching panel; in a Beacon Hill or Back Bay kitchen there is nowhere to take it, so the machine is diagnosed and repaired in place, panels off. On the Whirlpool-based units the parts book is shared and stocked. On the built-ins and the commercial ranges, the part numbers belong to those models alone, still in Whirlpool's catalog but not on a distributor's shelf, and lead times follow that.

Most of the time, yes. Evaporator fans, defrost components, thermistors, control boards, ice makers and door gaskets are all reached from the front or top with the trim and grilles off. Sealed-system work is heavier but is also done in place. The one thing that requires moving the unit is damage to the cabinet itself, which is rare.
It depends on which KitchenAid. On counter-depth refrigerators, freestanding ranges and laundry, the pump, board or actuator carries the same Whirlpool part number and is stocked accordingly. On built-in refrigerators and commercial-style ranges the parts are specific to those models, ordered from Whirlpool under numbers nothing else shares. The full model number, which starts with K, tells us which side you are on.
Usually, because it is two appliances. The gas cooktop has sealed burners, spark modules and valves; the electric oven has its own elements, convection fan and control. Each side fails on its own schedule. The unit is also heavy enough that two people move it, which adds time whenever a repair needs the back of the range. Single-fuel freestanding models are simpler and cheaper.
For a counter-depth model past ten years with a compressor or leak in the sealed system, replacement is often the better call, since the unit is a Whirlpool platform and a new one is a like-for-like swap. For a built-in, the math flips: replacing it means cabinetry work and a custom panel, so a sealed-system repair on a sound cabinet is usually justified.
