ACCREDITEDMelrose is mostly single-family Victorians and Colonial Revivals, mostly owner-occupied, so the person opening the door has lived with the machine for years and knows when the noise started. The houses were built for coal and ice: low basement ceilings, a bulkhead as the only way in with anything wide, a kitchen remodeled twice around the same plumbing.
The Highlands and Wyoming Hill are steep. In winter we call ahead to ask whether the driveway is cleared, because a dryer on a hand truck and a glazed slope don't mix.
These stages may vary slightly depending on the type of appliance being repaired and the specific requirements of the client.

Access, parking and what the buildings here do to a service call.
No. Melrose prohibits on-street parking from 2 to 6 a.m. year-round, and the town's residential overnight permit covers municipal and commuter-rail lots only and is not issued for commercial vehicles or guests. So nothing of ours stays on your street overnight. A job that needs two days is planned as two day blocks, and the equipment comes and goes with the van each time.
Downtown Melrose, Main Street from Foster to Emerson and part of Essex, is a local historic district, and its ordinance names window air conditioners among the things exempt from commission review. A mini-split condenser on the outside of the building is not named, so ask the Historic District Commission before one goes up. Exterior changes visible from the street otherwise need a certificate of appropriateness.
Depends on the vintage. The Victorians around the Highlands and Wyoming mostly run steam or gravity hot water that was converted from coal: air vents, the low-water cutoff, a circulator bolted on in the sixties. The postwar Colonials run baseboard hot water: zone valves, expansion tank, circulator. About one house in five still burns oil here, which changes the parts on the truck, so name the fuel when booking.
Outside the downtown district there is no design review, so the question is the house, not a commission. Plaster walls and no chases mean window units or ductless heads with a line set run down an exterior wall. Which makes sense depends on how many rooms, which side the condenser can sit on, and whether the electrical panel has room. That is the owner's call after a look.
